Chris Bailey, the first place runner of the Fifth Annual Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon, set a new course record after finishing the marathon in 2:28:38.

More than 2,000 runners competed in the half and full marathon with cheering crowds lining the streets from Wrightsville Beach to Mayfaire Town Center Sunday, March 16.

The race wrapped up the weekend-long Marathon Madness.

First, second and third place in the full marathon went to Chris Bailey of Charleston, S.C.; Jason Pyles of Green Bank, West Va.; and Thomas Crawford of Charlottesville, Va., respectively.

First, second and third place in the half marathon went to Kyle Mena of Wilmington, N.C.; Anthony Marois of Winston Salem, N.C.; and Matthew Hammersmith of Wilmington, N.C., respectively.

Bailey, who maintained a pace of 5:40 per mile, had never run a marathon competitively before.

The Quintiles Marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifying race, meaning athletes who fulfill entry requirements can compete in the Boston Marathon.

In 2014, the half marathon portion of Marathon Madness was officially the USA Track and Field North Carolina State Championship, attracting the most talented runners from across the state.
