The Assistance League of Greater Wilmington is gearing up for the sixth annual Play at the Beach fundraiser to raise money for several philanthropic programs.
The card and game event has been held in Wrightsville Beach since 2009 and will take place Thursday, Feb. 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Shell Island Resort.
More than 185 women attended the fifth annual Play at the Beach, raising more than $6,000 for the Assistance League of Greater Wilmington.
One program benefitting from the fundraiser is Operation School Bell, which gives underprivileged children clothing and school supplies in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties to encourage regular attendance and enhance self-esteem. The league also has an educational puppet program, called The Kids on the Block, focusing on bullying, healthy eating and dental care; and a ukulele group, called Slightly Off Key Stringalongs, that conducts sing-alongs for assisted living and long-term care facility residents.
Play at the Beach is already sold out, but will feature bridge, canasta, pinochle and other card games. Baskets are raffled during the event.
In March, the Assistance League of Greater Wilmington is joining about 90 other leagues throughout the United States by opening a thrift shop at 420 Eastwood Road.
“It’s all volunteers, and all of that money goes to our charities. We are 100 very active women,” said Dolores Miller, who is in charge of public relations for the Assistance League of Greater Wilmington. “We’re always getting new members.”
The thrift shop will feature gently used and never-worn clothes, furniture, collectibles, books, artwork, tools, glassware, jewelry and more.
The grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, March 15. The shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday and Monday.
