13 town board and committee members sought

The Town of Wrightsville Beach received 13 applications for the 13 open positions on local boards and committees as of Monday, Jan. 6.

Of the 13 applications, five are current members applying for reappointment.

The Wrightsville Beach Board of Aldermen will appoint and reappoint members during the Thursday, Jan. 23 meeting.

While the town’s advertisement for the vacancies lists Wednesday, Jan. 8 as the deadline to submit applications, town manager Tim Owens said there is never a hard deadline to apply.

“It really depends on how many we get. We may want to re-advertise if we’ve only gotten a few submittals, and it looks like that’s about what we’re getting, two or three for each committee,” Owens said. “… We take committee applications year round. Anytime anybody wants to be appointed to a committee, all you have to do is turn in an application, they’ll be considered. I would say the sooner the better, obviously, if they want to get appointed at this next go-round.”

The distribution of the applications is uneven, with seven competing for four positions on the Wrightsville Beach Planning Board, two applications for reappointment to the Wrightsville Beach Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, zero for the two open seats on the Historic Landmark Commission, three applications to fill four seats on the Wrightsville Beach Marketing Committee and one application for reappointment to the Wrightsville Beach Board of Adjustment.

“Some committees are more popular than others,” Owens said. “… Sometimes it’s hard to commit to these committees, because there is a lot of work involved. So lower turnout doesn’t necessarily surprise me.”
