Youth and adults will learn the game of tennis thanks to programs returning to Wrightsville Beach Park.

Lessons are scheduled to begin Jan. 15, and will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Adult lessons will be from 10-11:30 a.m. for sessions one through three. Lessons in sessions four and five will meet from 5-6:30 p.m.

Jackie Jenkins, a Lawn Tennis Association registered coach, will teach the lessons.

“I came from England, and I’ve been at Wrightsville Beach about 24 years,” Jenkins said. “I am a fixture down there; they call me the net post.”

Jenkins will hold six adult classes per session for five total sessions through April 2. Registration for Wrightsville Beach residents is $55 and $70 for non-residents. She said class sizes are usually four or more. Jenkins will teach tots aged 6-8 in four separate sessions from 3-4 p.m., and youth aged 9-12 from 4-5 p.m.

The second of the programs is called Tennis Up and is for third, fourth and fifth graders in five elementary schools, including Wrightsville Beach School, by the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association.

Rosanne Boswell, GWTA Community Coordinator, said the program started in the fall of 2012 and has undergone some changes in an effort to streamline the program and improve students’ experiences.

“This year we have a very impressive packet for each school which includes a colorful coordinator’s handbook with the drills and activities shown in easy-to-understand pictures with written descriptions,” Boswell said. “We also have colorful play books for the participants showing each of the skills they have learned. Each week the players get to check off the skills they’ve learned and at the end when they have learned all the skills, the leader will sign their book and give them a very cool bag tag.”

Enrollment is free and is limited to 25 participants. While GWTA provides most or all of the equipment, Boswell said that as with any free program, volunteers are a vital part of making it work.
