After nearly 30 years of working for the Town of Wrightsville Beach, finance director Peggy Jones’ last day of work will be Monday, Sept. 30. Jones, who announced she would be retiring in spring 2013, will be a difficult loss for Wrightsville Beach, said town manager Tim Owens.
“Peggy has a lot of institutional knowledge and has been a great finance officer but I can also understand the need to retire,” Owens said.
Taking Jones’ chair as the town finance officer and director of general administration will be Erica F. Walters. Walters holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and Master of Business Administration from East Carolina University. Her professional experience consists of nine years in governmental finance.
Owens said it was the seven of those nine years Walters spent as the finance director for the town of Selma, N.C., that set her apart from the 37 other candidates who applied for the position.
“Her tenure and qualifications in the town of Selma made her the leading candidate as well as her fit, professionally and personally, with this organization,” Owens said. “Budget wise Selma is very similar.”
Catching up on the institutional knowledge that will leave with Jones will be the biggest challenge for Walters, Owens said. However, he added that many governmental finance positions are similar because most budgetary and finance issues arise at the same times of the year for all municipalities.
Walters’ first day will also be on Sept. 30. The town will hold a retirement party for Jones in Town Hall Council Chambers from 3-5 p.m. that afternoon.
