Sugar Island provides homemade pies and other treats at the Wrightsville Beach Farmers’ Market every Monday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Most residents of the downtown Wilmington area know and love Samantha “Sam” Smith and her bakery called Sugar on Front Street. In fact, those same residents, and their sweet teeth, caused the rapid expansion of Smith’s business during the three years it was housed at its former location inside Old Books on Front Street. As business boomed, Smith and her husband Shawn Smith felt they had outgrown the shop on Front and relocated their business to Surf City, N.C. As part of the move, they renamed the bakery Sugar Island and increased their focus on wholesale and special orders.

Sam Smith, or “the brains,” as her husband affectionately calls her, has been baking since her teenage years. While Shawn Smith handles the business end of things, such as manning a booth at the Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach Farmers’ markets, as well as managing Sugar Island’s website, his wife stays busy in the kitchen. Placing emphasis on creating everything from scratch, Sam Smith’s baked goods are not only homemade, but also sourced from local ingredients. Peach pies, a customer favorite, are baked with peaches from Eden’s Produce, a neighboring booth at the Wrightsville Beach Farmers’ Market.

On the special order side of the business, Sugar Island’s services cater to weddings and baby showers. Shawn Smith said Sugar Island has recently catered pie buffets at weddings to accompany the traditional wedding cake, as well as gender reveal cakes for expectant moms.

While Sugar Island’s main source of business comes from wholesale and special orders, it still enjoys the face-to-face interaction with customers at the smaller scale. He says he enjoys contact with his customers from the original location.
