After last week’s rainy opening day, the Wrightsville Beach Farmers’ Market returned to its new home on the grassy field east of Town Hall. This week the market was met by more favorable weather and increased customer traffic.
This year has seen several changes to the farmers’ market. The market’s new location is met with both concern and praise from its many diverse vendors, as well as customers. Among the concerns shared include comments on the visibility of the market’s new location.
Considered not as visible from the road in comparison to its previous location on Old Causeway Drive, vendors worry that the incoming wave of tourist traffic will not see the market at its new location. Market manager Angela Cannon listed several positives of the new location and market additions.
“I love the new location. It feels like a farmers’ market, on the grass instead of the sidewalk,” she said. There is also considerably more space for vendors and available parking at the new location. Furthermore, the market is in prime placement for those walking the Loop or stuck in traffic on West Salisbury Street waiting for the bridge to go back down.
The market has added several new vendors to its list. Kitchen Ahimsa, selling 100 percent plant-based food, has joined the market along with Ogden Oysters and Sugar Island Bakery. For the first time, the market will also include craft vendors, two of which are Mike Bryand Photography and Airlie Art Glass. Cannon believes that including craft vendors at the market will help increase tourist spending during the summer. She said produce can’t travel long distances back home with tourists like the craft vendors’ products do. With a smile, she added that her pickles, however, “...have always done fine.”
The market will be open every Monday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. from now until Labor Day, Monday Sept. 2.
