April 14 through Tuesday, April 16, expect closures of westbound lanes across
the Heide Trask Drawbridge every night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Crews from
American Bridge will be repairing the steel grating in those lanes during that
Department of Transportation resident engineer, Kerry Cross, said until
construction begins on the northern two lanes in October there would also be
intermittent lane closures on weekdays to continue working on the electrical
and mechanical components, as well as the bridge tender house. Lanes would
never be closed on weekends, Cross said.
The next scheduled
all night closure of the drawbridge will begin Tuesday, April 23, at 11:30 p.m.
The bridge will reopen at 5 a.m. Wednesday, April 24. Due to the extensive nature of the repairs that will be occurring during this
night closure and the possibility that the bridge would take longer to clear in
an emergency situation, Wrightsville Beach town manager Tim Owens said there
would be additional police, fire and EMS staff on the island that night.
addition to the Wrightsville Beach Police patrol cars stationed on both sides
of the bridge, the WBPD boat will be stationed close to the bridge and an
emergency life support EMS crew will be stationed on the island.
Owens said the
town is trying come to an agreement with NCDOT to fund the extra staff but that
the extra precautions would be in place regardless.
