Amidst choppy ocean conditions with north northeast winds clocking in at 15-20 mph and 4-foot seas, competitors in the full length, ocean to sound division of the Surf to Sound Challenge took to the water in front of the Blockade Runner Beach Resort on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Once again, it was former Canadian olympic gold medalist sprint canoer Larry Cain who finished the 6.5-mile course first. In a close second was Wrightsville Beach local Jarrod Covington and Billy Miller, from Manteo, N.C., finished third.
The top placing women from the full length course were Kim Sutton, from Wilmington, in first; Kate Lewis, from New Bern, in second; and Dawn Ehman, from Ocean City, Md., in third.
For the 4-mile circuit around Harbor Island, the top overall finishers were John O'Hara, Neil Macindoe, and Claude Arnold. Locals Eric Burns and Steve Capps rounded out the top five.
The top women for the Harbor Island race were Sharna Tolfree, Karen Wilson and Danielle Lincari.
